The [V2] Apo-Rodagon 50/2.8 is sandwiched between the original 1979 version and the 1985/86 release of the N version, sold by Rodenstock for two years (1984-1985) and apparently sharing the catalogue number and updated barrel design of the N. It appears to be multi-coated, but the coating isn’t the same as the N, and the rear cell housing is approximately 3mm shorter. It’s also about 3g lighter.

Subject to confirmation, the greater likelihood is that ‘pre-N’ [V2] was an interim upgrade to the [V1] – rehousing the original optical formula and improving coatings. Its desirability would therefore lie between the two models. Certainly the resolving power of the single sample we tested seemed more in line with the performance of [V1] than -N, particularly with respect to wide aperture corner performance and field curvature, which were marginally improved by the N redesign.
