The 105mm EL-Nikkor is similar to the 80mm version: the same rendering style, contrast, colour saturation, coatings, sunstars, aperture type, maximum aperture, optical and body design and even weight. Obviously there’s slightly greater ‘defocusing power’ (smoother and slightly less ‘bubbly’ bokeh) and the possibility of greater working distance. Less obviously, the 105mm isn’t quite as sharp as the 80mm – which, remarkably, is only slightly behind the 50mm. In particular, corners at distance are not as well corrected. Focus shift is also a little worse. However, that still places the 105mm towards the head of the table at this focal length, where pride of place indisputably belongs to the Rodenstock Apo-Rodagon-N 105/4.
